TERRACE BAY – With spring seemingly starting to come around, so to are the wildlife. Migratory birds build their nests and begin to bring new life into the region while the bear population wakes up after a long Northwestern Ontario winter.
Therefore, the residents of Terrace Bay need to be highly vigilant when it comes to not feeding the wildlife within the township limits.
The Terrace Bay Bylaw, which has been in effect since 2012, states that “No Owner or occupier of land within the Township of Terrace Bay shall intentionally feed, cause to be fed, or provide or make available food attractants or other similar substances for the consumption of wildlife within the boundaries of the Township of Terrace Bay, on either private or public property.”
Bird feeders, salt licks, and any other feeding device will attract unwanted and sometimes aggressive wildlife into the township, which could cause danger to residents and their property. Residents are reminded to empty and remove their bird feeders between May 1 to Oct. 31, as the birds feed a known attractant to the bears.
Alternatively, the bylaw does state that residents may modify the device or make other changes to the property that prevents wildlife from having access to feeding on the device.
