NIPIGON — On the afternoon of March 28, an officer with the Nipigon OPP pulled over a vehicle speeding on Highway 11/17.

During the traffic stop, the officer found cannabis readily available to the driver.

A further search of the vehicle turned up over 1,000 unmarked cigarettes.

As a result, a 34-year-old from Winnipeg was fined over $1,200 and charged with speeding, possession of unmarked cigarettes, and driving with cannabis readily available.

According to the OPP, it is illegal to have any packages of cigarettes or fine-cut tobacco that do not have a legal tobacco stamp.

The consequences include civil penalties and, if charged and convicted of an offence, possible fines, jail time or both.
