THUNDER BAY – The number of COVID-19 cases in District of Thunder Bay hospitals has ballooned to 51.

That's about a 132 per cent increase over Monday's announced total, which stood at 22.

Just three of those in hospital are in an intensive care unit, according to figures released on Wednesday by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

The health unit announced 163 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19, the active confirmed case count jumping to 274, up 35 from the 239 announced two days earlier.

Case counts are almost certainly being vastly underrepresented, as the province at the start of the year severely restricted access to molecular testing, opening up only to Ontario's most vulnerable.

There were no new deaths reported on Wednesday, the district sitting at 89 COVID-related deaths since the pandemic began.

There have been 11,477 confirmed COVID cases in the District of Thunder Bay, including 7,213 in 2022.
