Environment Canada warns of possible whiteout conditions

Environment Canada has issued winter weather travel advisories for a number of Superior North areas.

The agency is forecasting up to 10 centimetres of snow for some areas, with peak snowfall rates of three centimetres per hour, along with the possibility of sudden whiteout conditions and significantly reduced visibility.

Strong wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour are also expected.

"Travel on Highway 17 along the northern shores of Lake Superior is expected to be treacherous," Environment Canada said in the advisory.

Environment Canada cautions that the conditions will start Friday morning and carry into the afternoon.
