Grand opening of Catholic Education Centre celebrates milestone

TERRACE BAY—This weekend saw the celebration of the grand opening of the new Catholic Education Centre in the City of Terrace Bay. Superior North Catholic School Board, community officials, families and students gathered at St. Martin’s Catholic School on June 11, where the new office expansion is located.

The relocation of the office building expansion in Terrace Bay from Simcoe Plaza to the new location attached to St. Martin School was completed in 2020, but with the pandemic, the board was unable to hold their grand opening event.

Board executive administrative assistant and communications officer, Deana Figliomeni, explained why the expansion was needed. “The expansion was required due to the required changes set out by the Accessibility Act; businesses and public sector organizations must be accessible to all, and modernization is required for compliance and safety,” she said.

Their grand opening event brought together members of the North Shore communities, families and students. Students and children were treated to board staff led children’s activities, and playground games.

Demonstrations of the school LU interactive system, Virtual Reality headsets, 3D-printer and a tour of the new building were key features of the day. Visitors were also treated to a barbecue.

The event a long- awaited part of the board’s future plans that according to the Board, represented a significant milestone and an important part of the North Shore. “Superior North Catholic School Board is proud to be an integral part of the North Shore and will always strive to better serve our schools. We are committed to being a vital part of the economic and educational aspects of our community,” stated Figliomeni.
