Greenstone OPP locate missing hiker

GERALDTON -- Greenstone OPP say they have found a missing hiker safe and sound.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, officers received a call on Sunday, June 12 around 11: 30 p.m. about a missing 68-year-old who was believed to be in Nakina, Ont.

Police say the individual was hiking on a snowshoeing they became separated from another person and had not been seen since 8 p.m.

OPP Emergency Response Team members and the Canine Unit was deployed to assist in the search for the missing person.

He was located by ERT in good health, and was transported to Geraldton District Hospital for further assessment.

Becoming lost on a trail can happen to anyone. Carrying a full-charged cell phone or GPS phone allows you to call police if lifesaving assistance is needed.

Members of the public are also advised to download the What3Words app which provides more accurate location details than traditional GPS. This app can be used by the Provincial Communications Centre to locate individuals who become lost and are still able to contact police.
