HORNEPAYNE — In the province of Ontario, bicycle helmets are required by law for children and youth under the age of 18. For children aged 16 and under, a parent or guardian must make sure that they wear a helmet.

Porcupine Health Unit reminds parent and guardians of that and add that, “A properly fitted and correctly work bike helmet can make a dramatic difference, cutting the risk of serious head injury and death by up to 60 per cent.”

When choosing a bicycle helmet, the best helmet is one that fits properly, is worn correctly and has been manufactured to meet strict safety standards.

Bike safety also requires other equipment, In fact, according to Ontario Bike Safety it is required by law.

Other equipment required by law includes:

  • bell or horn
  • lights and reflectors:
    • a white light mounted on front of your bike
    • a red light or reflector on the back at night
  • reflective tape:
    • white reflective tape on the front forks
    • red reflective tape on the rear forks

PHU cannot stress enough how important it is to wear a properly fitting bicycle helmet; it can save your life.
