HORNEPAYNE—The Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) for the region is sending out an alarm in order to make everyone aware of an increase in suspected opioid overdoses.

In their recent news release, PHU highlighted that there is no consistent description of the drugs causing the overdoses other than potency. In addition, ANY drug may contain powerful opioids. People have overdosed and were unaware that they were using substances with opioids in them.

PHU offered a list of key things to be aware of.

• These opioids are extremely potent, a dose as small as a grain of salt can be fatal.

• Substance may come in different colours and textures, like counterfeit tablets and powders.

• Multiple doses of naloxone have been needed to revive people.

If You Use Substances:

• Don’t use alone. If people are using together, ensure one person can respond if an opioid overdose happens.

• Use the National Overdose Response Service 888-688-NORS (6677).

• Test a small amount first. Go slow.

• Avoid mixing substances.

• Carry naloxone kits.

• Use at a supervised consumption site. Safe Health Site Timmins – 21 Cedar St North / Timmins – is open 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

PHU asks that if you or someone you know uses substances, get a free naloxone kit at any Porcupine Health Unit office and at most pharmacies.
