MANTIOUWADGE -- The Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department is sharing some final tips to keep your family warm and safe this winter.

This week, the fire department is sharing winter storm tips to keep families warm and safe this winter season.

So far, the fire department has reminded residents how crucial it is to have a steady supply of heat in case of power outages, the importance of staying warm, keeping food cold and the importance of avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning.

On Thursday, fire officials stated to listen for updates during storms.

Listen to the news on a battery-powered or hand-cranked device. If you're using a cellphone choose texting over calling to keep phone lines free or use your landline.

Save 911 calls for emergencies.

Fire officials are also stressing the importance of preventing additional damage.

Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid a surge when the power comes back on; leave one lamp on so you know when the power comes back.

If you have electric heat, keep all taps on a slow drip to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
