May is Rabies awareness month

HORNEPAYNE-Porcupine Health Unit wants families, individuals and especially children to be extra careful this month. May is Rabies Awareness Month. Rabies is a viral disease that is usually transmitted from the bite of an animal.

In an effort to provide their community with important information that can help protect the public and the ones they love, Porcupine Health Unit, suggests some key safety tips.

To protect yourself and those you love from rabies it is important to closely supervise children around animals, as they are at higher risk of being bit. In addition:

  • Routinely vaccinate your pets and farm animals against rabies.
  • Teach children about animal behaviour and reporting rabies.
  • Avoid contact with an animal you think may have rabies.
  • Avoid touching or feeding unknown, stray, or wild animals.

Porcupine Health Unit wants everyone to stay safe. They ask that you report an animal that is acting strangely to Public Health or animal control. Should you get bitten, thoroughly clean your wound right away if you think that you have been exposed to an animal and seek medical attention.
