NAN to hold grand chief byelection in August

Leaders from across Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory are set to choose their next grand chief later this summer.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation on Thursday announced that it will hold its byelection to replace Derek Fox on Aug. 16 during its Keewaywin Conference.

Fox was voted out of his role as grand chief by chiefs-in-assembly last month.

The decision came after the chiefs heard the results of a third-party investigation ordered in March, the executive council said. Fox had been suspended since February following allegations he had breached NAN's code of conduct.

Fox was elected grand chief in 2021, following two previous stints as a deputy grand chief.
