Nipigon hopes to enhance tourist experiences

NIPIGON – The summer is quickly coming to an end, but according to Nipigon’s mayor, the town’s marina and waterfront area had a busy season.

Mayor Richard Harvey said a lot of the summer events that typically happen at the marina and waterfront area didn’t happen as city officials were anticipating the beginning of construction on the new administrative offices for the Superior National Marine Conservation Area, however, construction didn’t happen.

Although some of the events were put on hold this summer, 100s of tourists made a visit.

“Still every day there are 100s of tourists who are coming down here, coming down, checking it out, maybe grabbing a coffee and this is no question one of the greatest assets we have,” Harvey said.

Harvey is looking forward to watching how the community continues to develop in that part of town, especially with the new Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area's administrative offices.

Harvey hopes to continue to enhance tourist’s experiences in Nipigon.

“How we can enhance it to really enhance the tourist's experience and make sure that this becomes a real central point that draws people in.”

Harvey added last week, council discussed being prepared for accepting cruise ships, which would be a definite asset for local businesses.
