CHAPLEAU -- Congratulations were extended to the Township of Chapleau, who was recently crowned the 2022 Ice Fishing Capital of Ontario. They entered 161 fish caught and 39 residents participating in the event; which earned them 7,922 points.
The Municipality of Dubreuilville came in second with 18 residents catching 372 fish for a total of 7, 782 points. With 45 residents catching 193 fish for a total of 6,707 points the municipality of Wawa came in third place.
The Ontario Ice Fishing Challenge 2022, was scheduled to run the entire month of February, with all species eligible for entry. Participants from anywhere in Ontario could fish, as the challenge had both a local and provincial component to it, making it possible for anyone to enter and qualify for the prize pool.
The provincial challenge offered at total of $13,600 in prizes and draws.
The leader board was made available to all residents and the region, was posted by the Municipality of Chapleau and also showed that the municipalities of Cochrane, Ignace and Sioux Lookout, came in fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
Many other townships within the region entered this challenge, including Schreiber, and Terrace Bay.
