Ontario NDP to elect new leader in early 2023

TORONTO—The Ontario New Democrat Party, (NDP) announced July 15, 2022 that they will be electing a new leader in early 2023.

After the party’s provincial council voted Friday to set the rules of its leadership race, the NDP stated that they will be electing a new party permanent party leader, the first week of March 2023.

In addition, the Ontario NDP council adopted what they describe as, “a full book of leadership contest rules, including a set of foundational principles.” One of those key principles is the deadline for those to be considered as a candidate in the leadership race to register by December, 2022.

With a voice of confidence, party president Janelle Brady spoke about a New Democratic Party for Ontario, one that in her view is stronger and focus on not only electing a new party leader, but a leader prepared to become the next premier of Ontario. “It’s an exciting time to be a New Democrat in Ontario,” said party president Janelle Brady. “Our party is stronger than ever, and in 2023 we’ll be electing not only the next leader of the NDP, but the next premier of Ontario,” added Brady.

On June 28, 2022 the NDP selected Peter Tabuns to serve as interim leader of the Ontario NDP until the party elects its new permanent leader.

Tabuns was appointed to take up this temporarily role, long-serving leader Andrea Horwath, had decided to step down as party leader, after leading the party through four elections.

In addition, Sol Mamakwa, who claims that he will be a voice for he north, was named Deputy leader of the Ontario NDP, recently.

With these recent appointments and announcements, the Ontario New Democratic Party, also indicated in their news release that they are ready to show the people of Ontario that they are prepared to have a premier ready to face the issues that Ontarians are facing such as the health care crisis. “We’re ready to show Ontarians that we can finally have a premier who fights for families and workers—fixing health care, lifting wages up, and tackling the cost of living.” said party president Janelle Brady.
