OPP investigating after explosives found in Marathon

Ontario Provincial Police are investigating two incidents in Marathon involving the discovery of explosives.

MARATHON — Provincial police in Marathon are requesting information from the public after two separate incidents this year where commercial explosives were found in or near local homes.

In a media release issued Monday evening, police said they were called to a home on McLeod Drive in Marathon on March 4 over a report of the destructive devices being found there. The police’s explosive disposal unit safely removed them, the OPP said.

Then, police said, on May 3, explosives were found near a home on Hemlo Drive. Once again, the disposal unit was called in and the devices were safely removed.

In Monday’s release, the OPP said in both cases, the explosives were identified as products manufactured by Orica Canada Inc.

“At this time, there is no threat to public safety, however both investigations remain ongoing,” the OPP said.

Marathon OPP is asking for information from the public. People can contact the Marathon detachment directly at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
