NIPIGON, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police are searching for a male and a female after an incident east of Nipigon on Monday morning.
Police initially issued a brief message on social media advising motorists not to pick up hitchhikers in that area.
The incident began about 8:30 a.m. on Highway 17 in which the two suspects are believed to have been involved in a motor vehicle collision.
When a passing motorist stopped to help them, they assaulted the driver and attempted to steal the Good Samaritan's vehicle.
The victim was able to prevent the theft, after which the male and female fled the scene.
OPP said they are still believed to be in the general area.
Motorists are advised not to pick up hitchhikers, and to contact OPP if they see anyone hitching a ride in the vicinity.
