HORNEPAYNE—After consideration and focus on Ontario Public Health Standards to which health units are accountable, the Porcupine Health Unit will no longer be delivering the Preschool Speech and Language Program and the Infant Hearing Program as of Sept. 30, 2022.

“This decision is very difficult,” stated Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer for the PHU. “We remain committed to ensuring families who need this program are supported through this change,” added Catton.

Their news release indicated that Families who are currently receiving services as well as those who are on a waitlist for PSL services from the PHU will be supported throughout the move of the program to the Cochrane Temiskaming Children’s Treatment Centre.

PHU also stated that “Once further details are known, all families receiving services as well as those on the wait list will be contacted directly by the PHU.”

In Ontario, PSL and IHP programs fall under the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. While details are to be determined, the health unit is committed to working with MCCSS and the CT CTC.

“Ensuring a seamless transition is important to the PHU, and we will assist the ministry and CT CTC in any way we can to minimize disruptions to clients and families,” added Dr. Catton.
