GREENSTONE—The Township of Greenstone began its Environmental Waste Management public hearings in the Town of Longlac, on Nov. 7. The final two dates are set this week, for Geraldton and Beardmore.
These hearing have been earmarked by Council in order to facilitate community input and and will be hosted at each of Greenstone's Wards. Mayor Renald Beaulieu stresses the importance of information sharing, with residents and stakeholders in each of these Wards.
Beaulieu believes these public hearings are very important. He sees these forums as a tool to help identify the options that are available for waste management and disposal.
“This is important because we want people to know what is going on and want our people are be involved in this process every step of the way,” said Greenstone Mayor Beaulieu. So that way, when things do happen once these reports come back, you will have had your chance to ask questions,” he said.
The Township's goal is to create a long-term plan to manage and dispose of their solid waste. The mayor has stated that part of the process needed to reach this goal, is to ensure that they invite residents in all Wards, to participate. “We are distant in Greenstone and it is important for people to know what is going on," said Davis. "The key is people ask about recycling and this is the place where some of these questions can be answered because Council doesn’t have the answers and the expertise."
The series of open houses began in Longlac at the Sportsplex and ran from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Similar open houses were be held, Nov.8, in Nakina. Today they are set to be in Geraldton, and the final day is scheduled for Beardmore on Thursday, Nov. 10. Each of these public open house meetings will be held at each of their respective Community Centres, at the same time from 3:00-7:00 p.m.
