GERALDTON—Grade 5 and Grade 8 students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Geraldton and Our Lady of Fatima School in Longlac had the opportunity to engage in experiential learning by participating in a woodworking workshop.
Math lead for Superior North Catholic District School Board, facilitated a woodworking workshop that was grounded in mathematical thinking and modelling.
Students were first required to select their woodworking project, either a small chest or a birdhouse. They then created a blueprint design and used ratios to scale the drawing.
The next step was to determine how much wood they needed as well as other materials in order to build their project, which facilitated the need to integrate financial literacy.
Before the hands-on-learning days, the board described how, “students were required to watch a safety video outlining how to work safely with construction tools and materials. With the experiential learning strategies, students were able to start measuring, cutting, gluing and nailing their woodworking project together.
When completed, students recorded their projects in their digital portfolios.
