UPDATE: One person died in early morning collision with moose

PAYS PLAT — The 42-year-old driver of a Tesla that hit a moose on Highway 17 has died.

A passenger was also airlifted to the Thunder Bay hospital with serious injuries, according to an OPP spokesperson, who confirmed the fatality. 

The collision occurred in the early hours of Friday morning near Pays Plat.

The Schreiber Fire Department reported just before 2 a.m. that emergency services were responding to the collision just east of the First Nation and that westbound traffic was being stopped at Schreiber.

At approximately 4 a.m. they were reporting a highway closure in both directions and residents were reporting on social media that traffic was backed up in Nipigon.

According to the fire department, the highway reopened just after 7 a.m.
