UPDATE: One person died in early morning collision with moose

PAYS PLAT — The driver of a Tesla that hit a moose on Highway 17 has died.

A passenger was also airlifted to the Thunder Bay hospital with serious injuries, according to an OPP spokesperson, who confirmed the fatality of the 42-year-old from Scarborough, Ont.

The collision occurred in the early hours of Friday morning near Pays Plat.

The Schreiber Fire Department reported just before 2 a.m. that emergency services were responding to the collision just east of the First Nation and that westbound traffic was being stopped at Schreiber.

At approximately 4 a.m. they were reporting a highway closure in both directions and residents were reporting on social media that traffic was backed up in Nipigon.

According to the fire department, the highway reopened just after 7 a.m.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the deceased driver was American.
