NIPIGON—Students in the Early Years classes at George O’Neill Public School participated in their own class construction projects.

Mr. Gyori’s junior kindergarten class, Mr. Lebar’s JK/1 class and Mrs. Tuuri’s 1 / 2 classes began their project, recently, and will continue over the next few months. This unique hands-on project was made possible through a partnership between SGDSB and Work Boots Careers with Jamie McMillan.

Students were encouraged to “Delve into the world of skilled trades and construction. Over the next few months, they will engage in planning and building their own house using big sheets of cardboard and other materials”. The classes will be challenged to build their homes, using materials provided, while at the same time learning the trade skills needed to plan begin and complete such a project.

The teachers and students expressed their gratitude to Superior North Greenstone’s School Board Early Years Lead, Hillary Freeburn, and Shawna Grouette, SNDSB Experiential Learning Lead, for bringing amazing learning opportunities to their school.

The coming months will definitely continue to be both challenging and engaging for both students and teachers.
