MARATHON — The Marathon Sno-Kickers Snowmobile Club will be hosting an event on Saturday in celebration of International Snowmobile Ride Day.

Craig Colbourne of the Marathon Sno-Kickers Snowmobile Club said that the idea of the international snowmobile ride day was in-part to introduce new people to the sport that they had never experienced before.

“We'll have designated drivers and snow wheels to bring people for a ride and show them some of our trails, give them a taste of what we have to offer, we have over 300 kilometres of groomed trail,” he said. “And also, for anybody who is already involved in the sport, just to come out and socialize.”

Colbourne said that the group has seen some new interest in the sport locally, there haven’t been many tourists out on the trails due to weather conditions.

“It's been a really weird winter for weather and the trail connecting us with the rest of the province hasn't been fully open yet,” he said.

“But hopefully in the next couple of weeks we are going to see some tourists. I've had quite a few inquiries from people in Southern Ontario and even as far as Indiana wanting to come up here, they're just waiting on the those trails to open up. So hopefully Mother nature is on our side.”

The event will run from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Trail Head on Peninsula Rd. next to the Generation Mining building to celebrate the sport and will feature a bonfire with snacks and some of our equipment on display, including the club’s groomer, side-by-side and brush cutting equipment to show people what goes into maintaining the trails.

The event is free of charge and open to all ages and for more information, visit Marathon Sno-Kickers on facebook
