RED ROCK—After receiving funding to purchase a class set of professional cameras for students to use and learn with, the grade 5/6 students at St. Hillary Catholic School was able to learn about photography and how to operate a camera.
This activity is part of Superior North Catholic District School Board’s “Experiential Leaning Project”. On March 10, 2022, the Board acknowledged their school’s use of these cameras in the curriculum.
The Grade 5/6 teacher Ms. Hogue, made the goal of the project to enable students to get outside the classroom, into the outdoors and take photos. She had her students use the images to learn how to write a photo essay. As a result, students were engaged in the writing process through hands-on learning outdoors.
Community partners became part of this activity, with Hogue enlisting the assistance of a professional photographer, Tara Arps-Ledger with Arps Photography. She was able to, “support students’ scaffolded learning of how to properly and safely use the camera.
Hogue outlined how “students are learning the art of composition, filters and how to use the camera to capture and express their vision."
To support students considering how the new skills they are learning will support them in their future, students are using the Xello platform to learn more about themselves and who they want to become. Students will be reflecting on their learning experience and consider how they can transfer the skills to their career goals and ambitions.
