TERRACE BAY—During the Month of March, students of Superior North Catholic District School Board, (SNCDSB) participated in Skills Ontario virtual presentations, that gave them access to hands-on learning.
These virtual presentations took part over 17 classrooms, and featured hands-on learning workshops centered around skilled trades, and technology, with a specific focus on carpentry. Students from Kindergarten to other grade levels, had the opportunity to participate in this program and learn about skills trades from a “valued learning partner Skills Ontario.”
Sarah Clowes, SNCDSB Technology Enabled Learning Teacher Contact and the Board, both shared that as part of this initiative, students built either a birdhouse or a model cabin. The learning opportunity was described by the Board as one that, “provided students with the ability to work with wood and carpenters glue, and use their hands in a tactile learning method, while at the same time, leaning about skills trades and technology.”
By engaging and participating in this program, students were given a glance into how to pursue a vocation in carpentry and skilled trades. The kits and presentations were sponsored by Skills Ontario and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, (OYAP). The Board thanked their partners in learning, by expressing gratitude to, “our learning partners that enrich our students’ learning through engaging in career and pathways initiatives.”
