Three new forest fires bring regional total to 37

THUNDER BAY – The number of active forest fires is holding relatively steady, at 37, despite three new fires being discovered since the last update provided by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services.

Two new fires were identified on Friday.

Thunder Bay 22 is located two kilometres northwest of English River, and at 0.1 hectares, is not considered under control.

Sioux Lookout 42, located within Pickle Lake, is 0.4 hectares and also not under control.

A third fire, Sioux Lookout 41, was discovered near Lynxpaw Creed, about 84 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout. It’s 0.1 hectares and considered under control.

The largest fire in the region, Sioux Lookout 7, is now 11,571 hectares in size, with hose lines established at the southern end closest to the community of Cat Lake First Nation. The northern section is being monitored and the fire is not considered under control.

Red Lake 28, located 50 kilometres north of Lac Seul First Nation, is 3,064 hectares and not under control. Values assessment and protections are ongoing, according to an AFFES release.
