TERRACE BAY – The arena's brine pump was the topic of discussion at last night's Town Council meeting in Terrace Bay.
“As most residents are aware last October, we had issues with our brine pumps and it almost put a cap on our entire arena season, and thankfully with some good help from the mill and lots of hard work, we had an arena season,” said Mayor Jody Davis.
Last Oct., the Terrance Bay arena’s brine pump suffered a costly failure.
It was concluded by CIMCO, an ice rink and industrial refrigeration company, that the pump was unrepairable due to the aging condition.
CIMCO provided a quote, at the time, for the purchase and installation of new brine pumps at an approximate cost of $51,000 and it was estimated that the pump order would take eight-12 weeks to arrive.
Based on this information, council solemnly decided to put the installation of the new brine pump on hold
However, representatives from AV Birla Terrace Bay caught wind of this development and offered their services to tentatively repair the brine pump.
The administration took full advantage of this opportunity from AV Group and soon after the installation of the repaired brine pump was approved along with the installation of the arena ice.
This would allow the arena to continue to operate during the 2022-2022 skating season.
It was also determined that the administration would include the capital work and procurement of new pumps, during the 2022 budget process.
During the council meeting in early March, the Brine Pump project was approved based on the scope of work reviewed in the fall of 2021.
However, this time around, the town officials contacted several vendors seeking additional quotes on the same scope of work.
In addition to CIMCO, administrative officials secured quotes for the work from Berg Chilling and the Northland Group who provided competitive quotes within the townships budgeted amount.
After reviewing the quotes, it was determined that the contract be awarded to Berg Chilling as the vendor for the Arena Brine Pump Capital project.
Berg Chilling quoted the price for removal, procurement and installation of new brine pumps at $47,609, which was under the budgeted amount of $64,750.
The Brine Pump Project is expected to begin this summer and be completed in time for the fall skating season.
