Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Student Affairs, the Coordinator, Learning Centre & Accessibility Services is responsible for developing, implementing and supporting academic accommodation planning for students with disabilities at Algoma University. The focus on these services will support retention efforts and improve academic success. Please note that the expected hours for this position will be based on a 35-hour work week. Non-regular hours may be required on occasion to accommodate service to students, exams, and events
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordination of Accessibility Services (60%)
Develops, prepares, and submits the Annual Report on the Accessibility Fund for Students with Disabilities to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
Assesses Learning Centre and Accessibility Services Office financial needs and plans expenditures in accordance with the parameters of the Accessibility Fund for Students with Disabilities.
Executes, tracks, and reports on expenditures of the Accessibility Services Office.
Maintains, populates, tracks, updates, and reports on student Disability Statistics in accordance with Ministerial guidelines.
Provides documentation requirements to incoming students.
Reviews/assesses all professional documentation to determine eligibility for accessibility services and academic accommodation.
Coordinates with partners in Accessibility Services at Extension Campuses to ensure the accommodation needs of Algoma University Students are met.
Interprets medical, psycho-educational assessment, and other accessibility-related documentation in support of a student’s need for academic accommodation.
Conducts informal screening of students suspected of having a Learning Disability.
Coordinates referrals for students to the Northern Ontario Resource and Assessment Centre for further testing and arranges testing appointments. Compiles student’s prior documentation and participates in feedback sessions with Registered Psychologists upon assessment completion.
Meets individually with students to review and discuss academic needs and functional limitations.
Determines, develops, and institutes appropriate academic accommodations and individualized accommodation plans that mitigate the student’s functional limitations while preserving dignity and academic integrity.
Liaises regularly with faculty on behalf of students, resolving accommodation or accessibility questions, complications, concerns, and/or any disagreements that may arise regarding the accommodation plan.
Responsible for hiring and training note-takers, readers/scribes, proctors, and loaning of adaptive equipment.
Preparation and submission of all required timesheets.
Provides new students and prospective students with information regarding the policies and procedures of Accessibility Services.
Assists with the development, writing, implementation, and maintenance of policies related to academic accommodation and Accessibility Services.
Development, implementation, and maintenance of policies related to academic accommodation and Accessibility Services.
Creates, maintains, and communicates Accessibility Services procedures.
Provides referrals to on- and off-campus supports where appropriate, including Wellness Services, the Writing Lab, Learning Strategist/Assistive Technologist, and Financial Aid, among others.
Determines required technology and equipment for Accessibility Services and the Learning Lab.
Executes the purchasing of Accessibility Services technology and equipment and tracks and reports on the expenditures.
Researches, prepares, and submits applications for students requiring disability-related services or equipment through the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) program.
Reviews student documentation to determine preliminary eligibility for equipment/services through this program and interviews students to determine their needs.
Learning Centre Coordination (35%)
Coordinate Accommodated Examinations (for students with accessibility needs).
Coordinate the administration of tests and exams for students with accommodations, ensuring that appropriate test and exam invigilation and proctoring practices are maintained. Ensure the integrity of the testing process and the security of testing materials. Identify and resolve student and faculty issues.
Determine and plan the testing-related academic accommodations for students with disabilities, consulting with faculty when necessary.
Work closely with the Learning Strategist/Assistive Technologist to develop and implement programs and services that support students' learning needs.
Support the application of hardware and software in the use of assistive technology.
Refer students to LS/AT positions who are eligible to receive Enhanced Services based on their assessment results.
Liaise with and coordinate support for students with accommodations with Algoma University contractors (e.g., campus counselling and wellness services).
Outreach (5%)
Coordinate with Students, Faculty, and Community (Outreach).
Act as a resource to faculty, staff, Algoma University, and high schools.
Present to secondary schools, parents, teachers, and school officials as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A University degree, and a minimum of three (3) years of work experience in academic accommodation planning for accessibility needs in a post-secondary setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
A minimum of one (1) year of experience working with international students.
Experience working with students with learning disabilities and providing academic accommodations based on recommendations in psychoeducational, medical, and other assessments is required.
Understanding of laws pertinent to accessibility services, including the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC), is required.
One certification in Mental Health response training (Non-violent crisis intervention training, ASIST, MHFA, SafeTalk, or equivalent) is required.
Demonstrated ability to assess student needs (social, emotional, and academic), providing support with empathy and dignity while exercising good judgment and maintaining confidentiality.
Capable of leading new programming development and evaluation in student well-being services.
Knowledge or experience with assistive technology is an asset.
Strong computer skills, with experience using (or the ability to quickly learn) key technology such as collaboration tools, Microsoft applications, Google Workspace, and student records systems.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation abilities.
Strong attention to detail, with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
Commitment to work both as a team member and independently.
Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage time efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions.
Willingness to work non-regular hours and to travel as required to Timmins or Brampton Campus.
