Job Summary

We are welcoming applications for a Research Coordinator to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced research professional to join us in an essential role supporting the newly awarded New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Brain Health Assessment Research Project.

Dr. Jennifer Walker, Principal Investigator, is a member of Six Nations of the Grand River and an epidemiologist. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Health Data and Aging, which supports an Indigenous community-engaged research program that focuses on dementia and aging. Dr. Jennifer Walker along side Edith Mercieca, Maamwesying Director of Home and Community Support Services and Co-Principal Investigator is leading this highly innovative community-based research project. This project focuses on developing and evaluating culturally appropriate approaches to memory and brain health screening in Indigenous communities.

The Research Coordinator will play a central role in coordinating project activities—including community engagement, data collection and analysis, and knowledge sharing—with a focus on ensuring the work respects Indigenous ways of knowing and being. You will work closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, academic partners, health professionals, and community members.


Key Functions

· Develop an implementation plan for research projects.

· Design promotional strategies and related materials to encourage participation and support for research projects. Perform quantitative analyses of research data.

· Interview study participants to gather qualitative and quantitative data.

· Facilitate focus group sessions with project participants.

· Coordinate and manage the collection, delivery, entry, verification, analysis, and reporting of data.

· Oversee the design and maintenance of databases, data collection forms, error checking methods, and related programs for collection, analysis, and reporting.

· Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise and interpret published literature. Write sections of scientific papers, funding proposals, grants, and abstracts.

· Coordinate the activities of research staff and resources to ensure that projects progress in accordance with predetermined timelines.

· Develop estimates of time and resources for research projects. Use statistical software to analyze data and interpret results.

· Write data management and operations documentation for projects.

· Liaise between the project centre and remote project sites and personnel.

· Ensure that relevant research methodology is applied and all research material is handled in accordance with established protocols, policies, and procedures.

· Develop presentations and present information and training sessions to project personnel and project participants. Present at meetings, seminars, and conferences.

· Keep project participants informed of project progress through regular reports and newsletters. Implement and maintain research project budgets.

· Create financial projections and make adjustments to research project budgets throughout the fiscal year.

· Exercise appropriate controls, monitor, and reconcile accounts.

· Conduct literature searches.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Public Health, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.

· Minimum 5 years of research experience.

· Experience working with Indigenous communities is a strong asset.

· Strong knowledge of research design and data analysis (quantitative and qualitative).

· Proficient in statistical software and data management tools.

· Excellent project management, organizational, and communication skills.


Additional Requirements

· Willing and able to travel to participating communities regularly.

· Office-based work with regular travel to First Nations communities.

· Comfort working in environments where sacred medicines may be used (e.g., sage, cedar, tobacco).

· Mental and emotional resilience required to navigate sensitive topics and community priorities.

What to expect?

Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time to time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines such as tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar may occur.

Our vision aptly describes how the Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services Board oversees both N’Mninoeyaa Aboriginal Health Access Centre and the Baawaating Family Health Team to deliver quality primary and therapeutic health care to all individuals in its member communities as well as the urban aboriginal population residing in the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Our health board consists of three (3) First Nations Chief & Council members who also serve as the Executive Committee for Mamaweswen, the North Shore Tribal Council.

We provide services on an outreach and collaborative basis to eleven (11) First Nation communities and one (1) Indian Friendship Centre through our N’Mninoeyaa Health Access Centre. We also manage our own Family Health Clinic agency for our west end clients. Our First Nation communities include Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Serpent River First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Batchewana First Nation, Michipicoten First Nation, Chapleau Cree First Nation, Chapleau Ojibwe First Nation, and Brunswick House First Nation. Baawaating Family Health Clinic provides services primarily to our off Reserve population residing in Sault Ste. Marie as well as to non-Aboriginal local residents.
