Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a member of the Infectious Diseases team, which is responsible for the delivery of the requirements mandated by the Ontario Public Health Program Standards (OPHS). As part of the interdisciplinary team, the NP provides clinical, counselling and referral services within the district of Algoma. Clinical duties will include provision of health assessments, physical examinations, and health management of clients. The NP will also be responsible for the provision of services in the realm of health promotion, health protection, and disease prevention for individuals and families as they pertain to the program.


Qualifications, Experience, and Nurse Practitioner Skills for this position include (but not limited to):
• Registered Nurse with Extended Class (Primary Health Care or Adult) in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses (CNO).
• A master's degree in nursing; or completion of a nursing program with additional advanced or extended primary health care nursing education from a recognized university, an asset.
• Minimum of five (5) years recent experience in a public/community health setting or primary care.
• CPR certification for healthcare professionals.
• Perform duties within the scope of practice of the NP including, conduct complete and focused physical assessments, communicate health findings and diagnoses, prescribe treatments and medications, order laboratory tests, diagnostic ultrasounds and x-rays; specific clinical experience working with patients that require sexual health, family planning, healthy sexuality, and healthy relationships, an asset.
• Interpret results and determine diagnosis, recommend an appropriate therapeutic plan, which may include prescription of medication, health education, and/or referral to health care professionals and/or appropriate health services. Ensure proper monitoring/follow up care with clients.
• Ability to work with diverse communities, demonstrating respect, sensitivity, creativity, innovation, cultural understanding, non-judgement, and facilitation skills.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, collaboration and decision-making skills.
• Knowledge of health promotion, community development and public health program planning.
• Skills in critical appraisal of research studies using evidence informed decision making and research methods.
• Participate in health promotion/community development initiatives as needed.
• Orient, train, and support the placement of learners as requested.
• Occasionally perform other nurse practitioner core competencies that may be assigned to address gaps in clinical public health programs.
• Working knowledge of the OPHS inclusive of the Infection Prevention and Control Protocol and the Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted/Blood-Borne Infections Prevention and Control Protocol.
• Ability to effectively work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to use reflective practice to continually assess and improve practice.
• Ability to work in a self-directed, and highly responsive manner, to establish priorities and balance multiple priorities.
• Experience with electronic health records and electronic data systems.
• Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Must be reliable and have a good attendance record.
• Advanced oral and written proficiency in English is essential, proficiency in both official languages considered an asset.
• The ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
• Requires a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and use of a reliable vehicle.
