WO2 Sophie Craig Holding Her King Charles III Coronation Medal

MARATHON – On May 27, a youth leader from local air cadet squadron was awarded the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal for their contributions to youth development.

The King Charles III Coronation Medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Canada, their communities, or have achieved excellence abroad that brings credit to the country.

Under the command of Captain Mike Hamilton, Commanding Officer of 900 Ma’iingan Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, the air cadets hosted their event called the Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR), which is a ceremony that showcases what the cadets have accomplished during their training year. The review consisted of the presentation of the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal to Sophie Craig.

Craig was deemed a recipient to the award for her numerous years of sustained, unpaid, and significant contributions in youth development and sports in Marathon.

Since joining the cadet program in 2019, she has been a key resource for local youth ages 12 to 18. She has been coaching and providing mentorship in many areas like leadership, biathlon, and marksmanship for over 5 years. Her unwavering commitment to develop in youth the attributes of good leadership and physical fitness has earned her the rank of Warrant Officer 1st Class, which is the highest achievable rank in the program.

Her volunteerism extends beyond cadets through coaching women’s sports at Marathon High School, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer. She also coaches skiing with the Marathon Cross Country Ski Club.

The medal was formally presented by Captain Mike Hamilton during the Tuesday evening ceremony.

900 Ma’iingan Royal Canadian Air Cadets is a free program for youth ages 12 to 18. Youths interested in joining can register by emailing Civilian Instructor Donna Jaculak at [email protected] or by going to www.cadets.ca.
