Inspire: Elementary school students express feelings and emotions through art

As Pink Shirt day was recognized by so many Canadians last month, a Grade 4 class from St. Edward Catholic School in Nipigon, took that day's meaning one step further.

NIPIGON-- St. Edward Catholic School students expressed their feeling and emotions through art on Pink Shirt Day.

Pink Shirt Day aims to reduce bulling by celebrating diversity in all of its forms and supporting students in being safe.

St. Edward Catholic School's Grade 4 students used this day to inspire each other by expressing themselves and transforming their expressions into living works of art using their own faces.

"It's wonderful to see students express their feelings and emotions while transforming their appearance at the same time," said Grade 4 teacher, Mrs. Currie.

Several of the students expressed their excitement about being able to take part in this creative activity that celebrates each other.

Grade 4 student, Cullen, said was eager to express himself through art.

"You get to make cool and creative stuff," he said. "We open the right side of the brain."

Another Grade 4 student, Leah, was thrilled with the idea.

"You get to do art on your face, and it is surprising to learn new things," she said.

The Grade 4 students were excited to show their feelings to one another as they were painting their faces and sharing the experience with each other.

Bentley was happy to be able to create new things on Pink Shirt Day.

For Jay-Paul, the activity was all about having fun.

All the students enjoyed the experience, and for Jordyn, she was living through another one of her five sense, smell.

"It smells pretty," Jordyn said.

For the remainder of the school year, the students will create projects based on different subject matter.

Superior North Catholic District School Board executive administrative assistant and communications offer said it was a wonderful way for the students to show their feelings and emotions and creative abilities using art.

"Many of these projects are cross-curricular in nature as they not only deal with drama but literacy, religion and numeracy, too," she said.

The Grade 4 class spent the day showing each other what kindness means to them, a perfect way to spend Pink Shirt Day.
