MANITOUWADGE—The students, staff and entire Manitouwadge High School community shared that they have reached their goal for this year’s fundraiser organized in order to sponsor and support their newest member of their Wolverine family. Her name is Scheneica Philistin, an eight-year-old Grade 1 student, from Haiti.

Last December the school student council under the guidance and leadership, of April Robinson, and during their holiday countdown, the students at Manitouwadge High School decided that “it would be a good time to give back”. By asking every student to donate $1 a month or $10 for the entire school year, they were able to sponsor a special child who is eight years old.

April Robinson, guidance councillor, for MHS was instrumental in bringing the idea of sponsoring a child to Student Council, for which ironically her daughter is president. They shared how this project actually was in the works two years ago, pre-COVID.

Throughout the past school year, the school community watched their donations grow by referring to a bulletin board set up in the school main hall with a thermometer to show how well the fund was going. Their goal was to raise $500 for this year, and that is exactly what they were able to do.

In fact, the school shared that they were able to raise more than what they had hoped to for this year. They stated that, “We have achieved our goal for this year and have a good start for next year.”

This is an important achievement for the school because the way in which this sponsor program works and according to Robinson is “That it represents a 14-year commitment.”

For this year, the school is proud of this achievement and look forward to “moving it forward” again next year.
