MARATHON — The OPP have arrested and charged a driver with impaired operation.

An officer saw a motor vehicle allegedly travelling at a high rate of speed and initiated a traffic stop while on patrol on Highway 17 in Pic Township last Friday around 9:20 p.m.

According to an OPP release issued on Saturday, the officer detected signs of impairment while speaking with the driver, who was then arrested and taken for further testing.

The 60-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg.

A 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment were also initiated as per statute.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon in mid-July.

The OPP said if people have an urgent traffic complaint or suspect someone is driving while their ability to operate a motor vehicle is impaired by drugs or alcohol to call 911 immediately.

The police added that people with non-emergency traffic complaints can also call 1-888-310-1122, reach out online or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
