SCHREIBER – At last, Schreiber has a pharmacy.
Schreiber Pharmacy opened last week on Scotia Street in the township of roughly 1,000 people.
Prior to its opening, residents had to drive a ways to pick up prescription medications. The nearest pharmacy was in Terrace Bay, about 15 kilometres away.
Schreiber Mayor Kevin Mullins can’t recall the last time his community on the Trans-Canada Highway had a pharmacy.
In fact, the 68-year-old lifelong resident said, he can’t remember there ever being one in Schreiber.
With a medical centre just down the street, the new pharmacy on Scotia “seems like a natural fit,” he said.
And it’s a good thing for a community with an aging population, he added.
Many elderly Schreiber residents worried a little about making the drive to Terrace Bay to fill their prescriptions, sometimes under weather conditions that made highway trips tricky, he said.
The new pharmacy will also benefit residents of “communities like Rossport and Pays Plat First Nation and some populated unorganized areas west of Schreiber” since they won’t have to travel as far for their pharmaceutical needs, he said.
