DRYDEN — August is shaping up to be much busier than July for the Ministry of Natural Resources' Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services branch.
The MNR confirmed 17 new fires across Northwestern Ontario between Friday evening and Sunday evening, pushing the number of active fires to 38.
Only four of them are listed as under control, while two others are being held.
Of the remainder, eight are not under control, and the others are all being kept under observation at this time.
The wildland fire hazard in the Northwest region is predominantly high, but there are several isolated pockets of extreme hazard values around Thunder Bay, and through the MNR's Greenstone and Red Lake sectors.
