HORNEPAYNE—Environment Canada has issued a severe heat warning for the region, including Elliot Lake and Ranger lake area.

In addition, the weather in Hornepayne is not only hot, but it is expected to remain hot for the next day or two. The Algoma Health Unit wants to keep everyone safe during this heat wave.

When it is extremely hot, AHU wishes to remind residents that extreme heat can be dangerous and heat-related illnesses are preventable.

Here are some tips AHU suggests to help you keep safe during these hot days of summer:

  • Visit or check-in on neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.
  • Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
  • Take measures to avoid heat-related illness.

AHU reminds everyone to make sure they don’t forget to safely check in with older family, friends or neighbours who may not have air conditioning & are vulnerable to heat-related illness.

As a final note, AHU shared that you should also visit adults who are at higher risk of a heat illness at least twice a day.

Infants and children also need frequent watching for signs of a heat-related illness.
