Attempt to flee police leads to litany of drug and other charges

A Saskatchewan man was reportedly driving erratically on Highway 17 near Marathon, tried to flee police and was arrested and charged with 14 offences.

MARATHON – A Saskatchewan driver faces 14 offences after police received multiple reports of a motorist driving erratically and in an unsafe manner on Highway 17.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued on Wednesday, said officers responded to the calls at about 11:24 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, attempting to pull over the pick-up truck in question.

The driver exited the highway near Three Finger Lake, just east of Marathon, entering a forested area and onto ATV trails. The driver exited the trail and was apprehended.

A 40-year-old male from Carievale, Sask. faces the following charges:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Disobey court order
  • Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
  • Possession of break-in instruments
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Possession of Schedule III substance for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of Schedule I substance - methamphetamine
  • Possession of Schedule I substance - cocaine - two counts
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Drive motor vehicle with speed measure warning device

The accused was taken into custody in Thunder Bay following an initial appearance in court in Marathon and is expected back in court in the near future.

The investigation is ongoing.
