Significant winter weather is expected to make landfall Friday and create treacherous conditions through Christmas Eve.
Environment Canada has issued winter storm and blizzard warnings across the region.
For the Nipigon area, the agency is warning of a "dangerous blizzard" Friday afternoon into Saturday with falling snow and winds gusts between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour.
"Travel is expected to be very difficult or impossible due to near-zero visibility," the warning statement said. "Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow."
Most other parts of the region, including along the north shore and inland areas like Greenstone, Manitouwadge, and Hornepayne are under winter storm warnings. Those areas could get between 30 and 40 centimetres of snow by Saturday night with wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour and possible blizzard conditions.
