Colouring used as way to practice mindfulness and promote mental health

Students in grade 4-6 from Superior North Catholic District School Board were given a unique activity that helped them learn about mindfulness while colouring. They were shown how to colour a mandala, a circular art form.
Photocloring as mental health

TERRACE BAY—Superior North Catholic District School Board offered its students an activity during the month of February that promoted mental health.

The Board’s Positive Behaviour Support worker, Nicole Piche created a challenge to get students engaged, in Bell Let’s Talk, by opening up a colouring contest.

Students were invited to colour a “mandala” and submit their creations for a chance to win a prize. Mental health professionals recommend colouring as an effective way to practice mindfulness.

During this activity, students learned the definition of mandala, and its significance.  Mandala meaning “sacred circle” in Sanskrit, “is a circular art form often containing geometric and repeating designs. Similar to meditation, it focuses your attention on the present moment and away from worries and stress”.

The Grade 4 to 6 classes were able to create their own beautiful creations.
