THUNDER BAY - The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay District continues to climb with 97 new cases reported on Friday.
With 29 previous cases having been resolved, the total number of active cases in the district now sits at 380, up from 312 on Thursday.
Of the new cases, 89 are from the city of Thunder Bay or surrounding area, while eight are from District communities.
The new cases consist of 13 household contacts, 29 other close contacts, six from travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, four with no known exposure, and 45 still pending.
There was no change in the number of hospitalizations, with four people from the district listed as in hospital and none in the intensive care unit.
The Thunder Bay District has reported a total of 4,264 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, including 3,679 in 2021, more than 6.4 times higher than the 585 announced in 2020.
In the western part of the region, the Northwestern Health Unit reported 86 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.
These included 40 in the Sioux Lookout area, 32 in the Kenora area, six in the Red Lake area, five in the Dryden area, two in the Fort Frances area and one in the Atikokan area.
The active case count within the NWHU's jurisdiction climbed to 307, an increase of 48 from Thursday.
