Director of Education for SGDSB optimistic after first trustee meeting

The Superior-Greenstone District School Board recently held its first trustees meeting.

TERRACE BAY--The Superior Greenstone District School Board held its first trustees meeting last week.

According to the board, the newly elected board completed their oath of office and announced their board chair and vice-chair. The public was welcome to attend either in-person or virtually.

Director of Education Nicole Morden-Cormier says it was a very positive session.

“We started off the day with professional development around the role of the trustee,” said Morden-Cormier.” According to Director of Education, she was pleased to announce that Marathon’s Pinky McKray was acclaimed as Board chair and Allison Jarvis as vice-chair. The meeting then continued with their inaugural meeting as well as their regular board meeting.

Last month, school boards across Ontario held elections for trustees. The Superior Greenstone District School Board recently held their inaugural meeting with the new Board Trustees lineup. Director of Education Nicole Morden-Cormier says the learning curve for trustees is vital.

“There is a great deal of learning. As I said before, this role is quite different than the role of say a municipal councillor. This is an oversite role and there are some significant complexities around the role that trustees engage in,” said Morden-Cormier. “We started professional development at our inaugural meeting day and we will continue at a Conference in Thunder Bay Dec. 9 and Dec. 10.”

Returning trustees include: Kal Pristanski, Jason Nesbitt and Dr. Paul Cormier along with newcomers: Pat Liscomb, Dr. Megan Brunskill, Dan Fairservice and Julie Michano.
