THUNDER BAY – The District of Thunder Bay hit a dubious milestone over the past week, recording its 100th COVID-19-related death.

It was the 27th such death this year.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit made the announcement on Thursday, also announcing 142 newly detected COVID-19 cases in its weekly case count reveal.

Of those, 17 were in hospital and one of those patients is in an intensive care unit.

There are currently 86 known active cases of COVID-19, but the health unit has advised since the start of 2022 that the numbers are likely vastly under-representing the true case count, due to the lack of PCR testing available to the general public.

There have been 13,448 confirmed cases in the district since the pandemic began, with 9,184 of them occurring this year.
