Eight kitchens to face off in this year's Souper Bowl

Funds raised go to support local library programming
Nipigon

NIPIGON — Local businesses are going to be putting their best bowls forward on Tuesday in hopes of winning the coveted Silver Ladle at the 2023 Souper Bowl Cook Off.

Eight local business’s kitchens will be serving up soup on Jan. 17 from 5-6 p.m. in a blind taste test where attendees will vote on their favourite bowls.

While originally held at the Nipigon Legion, this year’s Souperbowl is being organized by the Nipigon Public Library.

Librarian Sumiye Sugawara said the event will have a two-fold effect on the library.

“We're doing some fundraising for programming, and we also want to get out in the community and have a few people looking at us that don't necessarily use the library all the time,” she said.

“They know we're here, but just a reminder of what we have, and they can talk to us and the board members while we're out at the event.”

Along with the Siver Ladle comes the bragging rights of having the best soup in the area, and Sugawra said that local kitchens were excited to take part.

“The restaurants were very supportive of the idea as soon as we reached out to them,” she said. “So, I'm very grateful for the support of the Community.”

Entrance to the festival cost $20 and Sugawara said that all proceeds will be going to support the programs coming up this year.

“In the spring, we are going to be doing a fairy gardening program, that's between Red Rock, Nipigon, and Dorian Public libraries,” she said.

“Nipigon Public Library is also going to be putting some of the money into the Harry Potter book club that we've got for the youth, and we are going to be putting some of it into our seed bank that we started.”

The Souper Bowl will be held in the multi-purpose room at the Nipigon Community Centre and the price for entry gets attendees sample bowls of soup from the 8 contestants: Ducky’s Diner, The Edgeview Restaurant, Nipigon Legion Ladies, two competing entries from Nipigon-Red Rock District High School, Red Pebbles Café, St. Edward Catholic School, and Sweet Treats and More.
