THUNDER BAY— If you receive an email advising that you have refund or reimbursement, it's wise to ignore it.

That's according to Thunder Bay police, who said in a media release issued Friday that they have received reports of scammers sending emails advising the recipient that they are due a refund or reimbursement after an overpayment for an account on a platform like Amazon or PayPal.

The email will likely ask the recipients to provide banking information and may either provide a "refund form" or a request to send money by e-transfer to validate the account, police said.

Local community members have additionally been asked by some frausters to download an app, such as AnyDesk, that will provide external control of the device, allowing them to have access to personal information.

Police said this type of financial scam is used to get information to compromise a bank account, noting that any money sent by e-transfer will be lost.

Anyone who receives these messages is urged to ignore or delete them, and if in doubt to check their account status directly on the platform in question.
