SUPERIOR NORTH – Environment Canada is warning those in the northern region to bundle up for the next few days as extreme cold is expected.

The government weather agency says Fort Severn, Peawanuck and locations north of the communities of Sachigo Lake, Big Trout Lake, Webequie and Attawapiskat will experience low temperatures of -30C to -34C with wind chill values near -45C.

The cold is expected Tuesday morning through to Wednesday morning.

A cold arctic air mass will remain over the area through mid-week. Increased cloud cover may keep wind chill values from falling below -40C in the community of Peawanuck Tuesday night.

Watch for cold related symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Make sure to cover up as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours.

Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.
