THUNDER BAY – For International Youth Day, FedNor has announced funding to create over $560,000 in internship opportunities for Northern Ontario youth.

As part of the Federal government mandate to attract more youth into skill trades, something Northern Ontario desperately needs, the investment from FedNor will help pave the way for youth to find internships with reputable companies across the North.

“On International Youth Day, we celebrate the important contributions that youth make to our communities. That’s why through FedNor’s youth internship initiative, the Government of Canada is investing $563,831 to support internship positions with partners across Northern Ontario. These roles will provide talented young graduates with critical work experience in their chosen fields, helping to build our region’s workforce of tomorrow,” said Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor.

Companies will receive funding from FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program which will support 12 separate initiatives throughout the region, according to FedNor’s release. In return, these companies will create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities by hiring a youth intern with expertise in a specific field for a one or two-year period, helping the employer to advance key projects.

Some of the companies receiving the funding are:

  • The Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF)   $35,000
  • Mikinakoos Children’s Fund (Mikinakoos)   $47,250
  • City of Thunder Bay   $35,000
  • Friends of Grain Elevators (FOGE)   $34,920
