SCHREIBER – Schreiber saw a lot of activity last weekend as teams and fans made their way into town for this year's Filane’s Showdown.

The 2022 Annual Filane's Showdown was a big success, said tournament organizer Mario Filane, who was glad to see a lot of parents and grandparents come out to show support.

“Even as people get older, they still like coming out to watch their kids and their grandkids, so, we had aunts and uncles; it was really fun to see a lot of adults feel like kids again,” he said. "So it was great to see family members coming out to see [their] family members and the games were all pretty good."

Filane said that Sunday’s two final games were where the most excitement was found with a lot of good hockey for the fans and fun for the participants.

“The women's game turned out to be a 1-0 game, right down to the wire,” he said. “And on the men's side between the plumbers and the stepdads, it was a 3-0 game; that's with an empty netter and it was back and forth the whole way and it was a lot of fun."

Proceeds from events during the tournament go to the go to the Fallen Rock Minor Hockey Association, which is a local organization that does not charge registration fees to any of its minor hockey players.

While Filane doesn’t have the official figures yet as to how much money was raised, he’s hoping to have raised around $1,000 for the association.

“If all goes well because we had pizza proceeds and we had the proceeds from the dance and stuff like that, once I return all that alcohol I'll have a better idea,” he said.

“But I'm hoping anywhere between $800 to $1,000 potentially that will go right back to the Minor Hockey Association and help pay for these kids to go to some tournaments and pay for their ice time and things like that.”

Filane wanted to send out a special thanks to attendees for coming out to show support and for supporting the local economy as well.

“Once the weekend comes and goes, we really notice the economic impact that a weekend like this has when you bring in four out-of-town men’s teams, two to pretty much three out-of-town women's teams,” he said.

“They're all shopping at the local grocery stores. They're eating at restaurants, they're staying in the hotels, so it was really great to see the support to our economy.”
