MANITOUWADGE -- Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department is sharing some helpful holiday tips that will keep your family safe.

Fire officials on Wednesday are reminding residents if they smoke, smoke outside because smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires.

It is important to encourage smokers to smoke outside, including outside garages.

Fire officials say always use large, deep ashtrays that can't be knocked over and make sure cigarette butts are fully extinguished.

Do not extinguish cigarettes in plant pots, which may contain a mixture of peat moss, shredded wood and bark that can easily ignite.
