Fire Prevention Week celebrates 100th anniversary

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall is celebrating 100 years of Fire Prevention week.

MARATHON-Many of the Fire Departments in the Southwest region are celebrating Fire Prevention Week.

This year marks 100 years of celebrating Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 9-Oct.15. This year’s theme is “Plan your escape”.

To celebrate 100 years of fire prevention week, Marathon Fire Department is hosting an “Open House” on Wednesday, October 12, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Marathon fire station.

The day will be a great opportunity to meet your fire fighters, check out the fire trucks and have children participate in a variety of fun games.

With this year's fire prevention week theme highlighting the importance of having a safe plan to escape in the event of a fire, everyone is encuraged to take the time to “plan your escape” with family, and co-workers.

In line with this year’s theme, the highlight of the week of Oct. 9-15, is to put a greater focus on the importance of working together with those you live and work with to be better prepared to prevent and survive a fire.

During fire prevention week, some of the things everyone is encouraged to team up with family to do includes;

  • Inspection of your home to spot potential dangers.
  • Developing and practicing a fire escape plan in order to be prepared to react correctly if a fire strikes.
