"For the kids": Skate exchange gives local youth a chance to hit the ice

Following the return of Red Rock's rink at the Recreation Centre, a new community initiative - started by one resident - is ensuring that those who wish to access the ice have the skates to do so.

RED ROCK — Do you or someone you know have old or lightly-used skates sitting in the closet, that haven’t seen ice time in ages?

The town of Red Rock is holding a community-wide skate exchange and is currently accepting donations, which will be exchanged or handed-out to residents in need.

Donations are being collected by town resident Gord Muir, who said that the whole thing came together through his own observations.

“I take my son down to the rink and often he’s got the ice to himself or there’s another friend out there, but I look in the schoolyard and he’s playing with way more kids.

"So I thought, we’ve got to get these kids' skates, get them on the ice, introducing them to the fact that we’ve got a lot of good ice here in Red Rock,” Muir said.

It was this past November that the rink in Red Rock finally reopened after closing for a few years due to a mixture of pandemic restrictions and a plant malfunction.

Now, Muir’s skate exchange is set to make the ice even more accessible for kids across Red Rock.

“The plan was to kind of make sure that no one was left out. I mean, hockey is an expensive sport. The last thing that I want is a kid not being able to skate because they don’t have skates,” Muir said.

In addition to skates, Muir is also collecting kids’ helmets.

And while he noted that there have been a couple of large donations so far, Muir pointed out that he is looking for more donations that would fit youth between the ages of 14 to 18.

“It’s for the kids. The focus is on the kids and making sure nobody gets left out.”
